Welcome to

This blog was started in February 2007 for documenting the shaping of my freestyle kayak (most of it is in french, except a summary in german). Pani Piyo! is the name of the kayak and means drink water! in Hindi, one of the main languages in northern India .

But the blog is not only about kayak, and you can browse through the categories: "Overland to India 2007-2008", "Pani piyo 2008" for informations on building a kayak with vacuum bagging (in French or German), "Building a paddle", "Wood - Carpentry", or "Miscellaneous".

You'll find texts in English, French and German. I'm sorry for this melting pot, but it is quite tricky for me as a french living in Austria to find the right language...

We discovered Mongolia ( from the 26.07.2007 on) mainly through our 2 canoe trips on the "Orkhon" and "Egin" Rivers: Ernst a german married to Bolor and living in mongolia organises great river tours.

As he knew that I am a kayakist, he proposed us the great tour in the Orkhon canyon which is a piece of adventure. 6 days on the water with some rapids that have to be carried on foot. All food has to be taken along in the boats, as during the half of the trip you don’t meet anybody and you are absolutely in the nature. We could nevertheless enjoy mongolian hospitality around a cup of tea in the “inhabited” areas. However, inhabited means that you come across one or two yourts ("ger") during the day! The people were as curious as us and sometimes asked us to leave our boats for visiting them.

One river trip was not enough, and Ernst wanted to explore a new river in the north of the country, the "Egin gol". We had very few informations before going there, and after studying the map it seemed like we were taking off for a trip of 200km on a river that we had never seen before...!!! These were 10 days of adventure on wild water grade 1 to 2 which is perfect with the "Old Town" canoes that we had. The river was flowing regularly and we always had to stay attentive, but thanks to this we could paddle long distances in one day.

We also went to Kharakhorin. There we slept at the crown guest house, had a 3 days horse tour in the mountains, and lived with a family for 2 nights.
